Luxembourg isn't a well-known country, right? One thing we know for sure is that Luxembourg is the capital, but anyone who has ever heard of Esch-sur-Alzette knows that it is worth the visit. The small city was awarded "the cultural capital of Europe" last year. If this doesn't persuade you to visit it, the rest of this blog will!

What not to miss?

Graffiti

As you walk around Esch-sur-Alzette, one thing that will definitely stand out is the graffiti. You will find small works of art all over the city's walls. But the real eye-catchers are the artworks that fill an entire house's facade. These works of art were created by the annual festival "Kufa's Urban Art Esh," one of the cultural events Esch-sur-Alzette has to offer! This site is very useful if you don't want to walk all over the city and go straight to graffiti. Here you can find where all the artworks are and information about the artists. https://streetartcities.com/cities/esch

What else to visit?

Gaalgebierg, le parc Municipal Escher Déierepark Escher Bamhaiser

This animal park is located next to a campground. If you like camping, we would definitely recommend this campground! It is a cozy family campground where a few cats run around, ready to cuddle. So next to here is the zoo, and it is open every day and has free entrance. This animal park has 150 animals, 25 species, two playgrounds, and places for relaxation. At the entrance, it’s possible to buy food bags so you can feed the animals!

Blast Furnace Belval

Be aware that this is a very touristy attraction. They sometimes call it the Eiffel Tower of Luxembourg. These lofty factories surround a new university in Luxembourg. Of course, this is the hot spot when it comes to science. You can climb about 40 meters up 180 stairs, guided by steelworkers who have worked here. Up there, you have a fantastic view of urban buildings. A few times a year, it’s possible to visit the blast furnaces by night.

Central Train station

This city's train station is where a lot of art comes together. In and around the station, you will find various forms of art. In the station, you can find a lot of graffiti. If you walk outside the station and take the elevator to the top, you will come to a bridge. This bridge is very artistic and is known for the beautiful pictures that are taken there. Walking through the bridge, you come to a park full of artwork. The bottom line is that there is something to be found in every corner of Esch-sur-Alzette. Therefore, we advise doing a lot of walking and admiring.

The best way to travel to Esch-sur-Alzette is by train. Luxembourg is known for free train travel, and you can get anywhere in Luxembourg very easily. If you live in one of Luxembourg's neighboring countries, it is also very easy to travel by car. If you live far away, traveling to Luxembourg by plane is also possibleThe airport is located along Luxembourg City, and you can easily travel by train to Esh-sur-Alzette.

When to travel there?

Luxembourg is a country with a lot of rain, but sunshine always comes after the rain. So we recommend everyone visit this beautiful town in the summer months. Luxembourg is not a tourist country, so it is not necessarily very crowded in the summer. This means that a last-minute trip to Luxembourg is possible this year! We also recommend that you consider the events. After all, there are a lot of events every week in this beautiful city. Do you like music, art, or theater? Then keep an eye out and plan your week or weekend away around these activities.

Average cost

You don't necessarily have to come here if you want a cheap vacation. Prices are fortunately not higher than in Austria, but they are not much lower either. For cola, you pay about 2 euros and 50 cents. If you go to a restaurant with two people and pay 50 euros for a three-course dinner, that's not too bad, right? But then you shouldn't go to tourist restaurants. To live here is very expensive. For example, you pay more than 1,300 euros for a 1-bed apartment in the city. But if you also go to work in this country, it should be affordable. The average income here is over 4,000 euros. Esch-sur-Alzette is close to the border of France, and many people go to work here and then pay rent in France.

Where to eat?

You can find a lot of restaurants in Esch-sur-Alzette. Whatever you feel like, they have a restaurant for it. The most extensive offer is French food, close to the town. We recommend you eat at Kulturfabrik. Here you have several cafes and restaurants, and the area is very beautiful. There is a lot of art between and in the restaurants. It is a bit similar to RAW in Berlin but a lot smaller.

Events

Every week, there are events in Esch-sur-Alzette. The Rock Hall and Kulturfabrik are the places for the best events in town. In the summer, you have several festivals with different styles of music. We recommend using this site to discover when and what events are happening!
