Tafelspitz
This national dish of Austria is a very classic one we highly suggest trying if you are a big fan of meat! Tafelspitz is veal or beef that is boiled with vegetables and herbs, it’s usually served with roast potatoes, horseradish mix, and other vegetables. This meal is quite simple, but that is why it tastes so pure and delightful!
Bratwurst and Sauerkraut
Sausages combined with sauerkraut make the coziest and heartiest dish you will ever taste! This meal is perfect for colder days, as it’s one of the best comfort foods to eat on a fall or winter day! It also has some health benefits, as sauerkraut is fermented and is known to strengthen your immune system and improve your digestion!
Käsespätzle
This is a dish you might not have heard about! This one is similar to mac & cheese, but has a lot more flavor! To make this dish the first thing you need is Spätzle (egg noodles), also a lot of onions, and of course a lot of cheese! A popular variation of it comes from Salzburg - Kasnocken. This is unique because instead of long noodles, they use little noodle dumplings! It's cooked on the stove, and all of the ingredients are mixed together!
Sweet Food
Buchteln
Extremely fluffy sweet bread rolls that are filled with Powidl (a sweet fruit spread made out of plums). The best way to eat them is when the bread is warm! Also, don’t forget to top them with creamy vanilla sauce!
Kaiserschmarrn
Kaiserschmarrn is a dessert that is packed with a lot of history! There are many stories surrounding these sweet shredded pancakes… The most important thing you have to know is that it was first made for Austrian emperor Franz Joseph! The name of these pancakes translates to ‘’Emperor's Mess’’. They are usually topped with powdered sugar and served with applesauce.
Punschkrapfen
Little bright pink sponge cake, which is filled with nougat and jam, and soaked with rum. As a typical and beloved cake, you can find this tiny yet delightful sweet in practically every bakery and shop in Austria. The biggest mystery surrounding this dish is that no one knows who invented it!
Drinks
Melange
People might mistake this coffee drink for a regular cappuccino, but actually it’s made with a very special and lighter coffee blend and topped with milk. When you order this drink at the coffee houses, they usually accompany it with a cup of water. The purpose of the water is to be a palate cleanser between the sips. That way, you will have a full experience of the special taste of Melange!
Almdudler
A popular carbonated soft drink that many Austrians enjoy drinking. The taste of this beverage is special due to the fact that it’s made with 32 natural alpine herbs. It’s super refreshing and has a sweet, tangy taste with a light aftertaste of the herbs. It’s a really good, healthy alternative to regular soda!
